This painting I called one of my epic paintings! It is quite a large painting. The reference photo was from Karen Broemmelsick who is an amazingly generous photographer with her images, and I was one of a few people who sponsored her trip to France to take these images. This one I fell in love with, I adore the heavier horses and these Comtois mares are just beautiful, so powerful and yet playful too. The painting itself took over six months to complete, as it would have to take a backseat to the commissions I was doing …but one thing I did notice was that in this time my painting style changed quite a lot, and my attention to detail had also heightened some what! Incredible to think that in such a short time my painting skills had deepened, which is really quite awesome to realise. The painting is very earthy in colour and I have tried to capture the beautiful spirit of these French draught horses.
