Concertina Artist Book, mixed media journey through a garden panel 2, collage. ‘In a Monastery Garden’ is a classical piece of music, by composer, Albert Ketelbey, inspired by his secluded visit to a Monastery. “It’s quietude and its aloofness, chanting of the monks, serenity and calm of the landscape….” Listening to the music, it spoke to me spiritually and whimsically as a catalyst for subtle storytelling, a solitude walk through a garden, a journey so very much needed in this tumultuous and uncertain times. Navigating each panel, imagery is crafted through layering, collaging, and embellishing of expressive mark making, music notation, text and printmaking; juxtaposed by the minimalist use of machine and hand stitching, framed by the clear, etched Perspex ‘end covers’, resulting in a harmoniously flowing and unified assemblage. Layers of thought-provoking elements through the two panels invites the viewer to a deeper reflection. Both Concertina panels should be displayed together, a continuous walk through the garden.
