You’re sitting on a milk crate in an alley with graffiti on the walls. This is a deliberate choice. You’re sipping a single origin espresso made by a barista with a Ned Kelly beard and sleeve tattoos. The espresso is appropriately bitter with notes of orange and cardamon. The alley is a little dim, because if you haven’t guessed it by now, you’re in Melbourne and it’s a bit of a dark morning.
The alley is lit by these cool lights in jars. It’s a very specific aesthetic that doesn’t appeal to everyone, but I would take this scene any day over sitting in a GJ’s in a shopping centre sipping a too-large, too-milky latte. After your coffee, you get up and brush crumbs (from a Portuguese tart) off your black coat. You leave the alley and catch a tram to your friend’s sharehouse in Thornbury. You’re housesitting for them while they go on a Vipassna retreat.
