If you were born in a certain pocket of time, you might have driven off with your family on a trip in a car like this or a caravan like this.
My family had an old beige station wagon, with rust on the sides and no power steering. We weren’t fancy enough to have a caravan, and instead would load all our camping stuff into a trailer that was hitched onto the car.
I am from a large family, so that’s a lot of kids to get organised and get their stuff into the trailer. One year my little brother forgot his bag altogether and I remember him having to go to Target in Albany with my Mum to get some clothes. They brought them back in a paper bag, this was before plastic was even an option.
It’s funny, I don’t remember much about that trip (there was something about whaling ships I think) but the paper bag from Target with Damian’s new clothes stands out in my memory.
