Description

Open Edition Reproduction

The “Salute” occupies a prime position on the south bank of Venice’s Grand Canal, opposite the Gritti Hotel. The Church was built to celebrate the end of an epidemic that destroyed a third of the Venetian population the early 1600s.

After a vigorous competition, the novel design of Baldassare Longhena was chosen, partly as the design suggested a crown for the Virgin to whom the site is dedicated. Within is a wealth of art and sculpture. A secondary dome and twin bell towers accompany the main dome, which is topped by a stature of Mary.
