Located in San Marco, near the Gritti Hotel, and across from the Salute, the 15th century Contarini-Fasan is rated as one of the prettiest of the gothic Venetian palaces.
Said to be the home of Desdemona of “Othello” fame, the lady was the wife of the dark-skinned Nicolo Contarini, “the Moor”, a famous leader, but a brutal and jealous husband whose wife left him. The two upper windows are “monoforas”, whereas the lower triplicate is a “trifora”.
Did you spot the builder’s error (not the artist’s!)?
