Watercolours are my first love. Albeit wildly and delightfully unpredictable (i.e. fun!), they are also steeped in tradition and conformity. This doesn’t sit well with me – I love pushing the boundaries. Unlike most watercolours, this piece is not painted on paper. This piece does not need a mat board, nor a frame under glass! To capture that time worn driftwood beach-vibe, I decided to create this piece on plywood, gessoed and coated with watercolour ground.

After splashing about (believe me, lots of water was used in the creating of this piece), I then sealed it with fixative and, of course, wax… just like a surfboard! (I hope you don’t try to use it as a surfboard?!) ‘Escape’ is an apt title I believe: it is an escape on many levels!
