Artist Biography

David Cross

David is an award-winning Visual Artist with a Master’s Degree in Art from the USA. He retired as a visual art educator and Head of Department, Visual Art after 40 yrs. David focuses on his passions of drawing and/or oil painting and has had success winning numerous art awards and awarded entries into juried exhibitions in the Brisbane area art scene over the past few years. David’s inspiration is the environment, using light as a catalyst and how it imparts on the subject matter. “When light hits an object, whether it be glass, metal, water, the human form or the everyday environment, it reflects, refracts, casts shadows and is even absorbed in the object. What I focus on is how I interpret this light as it reveals colour and form.” David’s work is in private collections in Australia, Europe and USA.

Grace Cross

I spent my adult 35+ career years teaching Visual Art in High Schools and TAFE here in Queensland. Since retiring from teaching in 2008 I have been fortunate to pursue my love of creating art through textile and mixed media design, winning various awards in several QLD Art prizes, and selected juried exhibitions for my mixed media/textile works.

My artistic process of personal discovery is intuitive, creating complex layered mixed media/textile artworks with a fusion of rusting, fibres, fabric, paper, acrylics, stitching and embellishments. Inspired by the organic ‘scapes’ of nature and the environment, my own personal vocabulary of marks journey through my artworks and help to compose my creative form of expression. By continuously adjusting the composition, I maintain a balance between harmony and disorder, placing texture, imagery, and marks on the surface.

For the past 10 years my focus has been on investigating, exploring, and creating with rust, using it in dying and printing formats on paper, fabrics, and canvas. I have found that incorporating rusted surfaces into my work has added luscious, fragmented layers that highlight the beauty found in the inherent processes of aging and decay. My rusted papers were a natural progression into my current foray of artist books and assemblages as well as continuing with collage and my textile explorations using slow stitch and other embellishments.
