Kristy-Ann is an Australian artist with a passion for birds. More than just capturing a likeness of birds, Kristy-Ann wants to share some of those special moments she has spent watching birds through her art. She endeavours to portray their unusual and fascinating behaviours, the beautiful places they live, and the funny things they do. Like tawny frogmouths magically materializing out of the bush, a robin stealing bugs from a spider’s web, or grey fantails fan dancing amongst the trees. To achieve this, Kristy-Ann likes to work from her own photos, she says her ideas and inspiration comes from watching the birds, not just the still photo. She believes a painting should tell you something more than a photo; something about the character or behaviour of the bird, or the mood or feeling of the place or moment.
Kristy-Ann uses a range of different styles and techniques to portray different stories and capture the personality or behaviour of the birds. She sometimes uses line to add emphasis or suggest movement, and often uses more loose and expressive styles in the background but with finer detail in the birds face and eyes to capture the soul of the subject and draw the eye. She generally uses very bright and pure colours to produce bold paintings that are both true to the subject and her interpretation of the mood.
Since her first solo exhibition at Percolator Gallery in July 2010, Kristy-Ann has had several more solo exhibitions (2015, 2018, 2024). She exhibits regularly at Yandina Historic House, with QWASI (Queensland Wildlife Art Society Incorporated) and other wildlife themed group exhibitions. She has received several awards at these exhibitions. Kristy-Ann also regularly participates in “Outside In” exhibitions at St. Vincent’s private hospitals; this is an initiative where artists display their art in the hallways to enliven the hospital for patients, visitors, and staff. Hospital staff say, “We see lots of positive changes in people because of the art”.
