Artist Biography

While based in Teneriffe, QLD, Marcus’ career and family undertakings involve travel. He always travels with a small watercolour set.

His painting goals are to enjoy being engaged in the moment, to capture the essence of the subject, keep it simple, sample good coffee, and keep colours bright. Watercolour is a great medium: It’s instant, tolerates only certain control, and requires clarity in what you seek to achieve.

Marcus believes in observation. The best painters are great observers, seeing things others don’t. Much is gained by slowing down and looking around you. David Hockney writes well on this subject. Dale Carnegie (author) was a great observer of people and this led him to tremendous insights.

In addition to drawing and painting he has always made items with his hands. In architecture school he would be often found in its woodshop. Pottery is a more recent undertaking, assisted by Mas and Miek Ceramic house in Brisbane, and Studio Pottery in London.

Born in Ireland, Marcus trained as an architect in America. He then had a full-time career in finance, investing superannuation (pension) capital into private companies globally. He moved to Australia in 2005 to work for QIC in Brisbane.

He now works part-time, teaches, mentors, and taps more into his creative side.
