Artist Biography

Marlene Millard – ‘Marlsart’
“You may take the girl out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the girl”!

This is descriptive of Marlene and her Artwork. Having a rural upbringing, Marlene developed an eye for detail regarding animals and nature, along with an appreciation of the beauty in ordinary aspects of life; therefore Marlene’s art reflects her love for our Country, its Rural Aspects, Flora & Fauna.

Enjoying a passion for drawing and art since early childhood; representing three dimensional on a two dimensional surface has always been an intrigue for Marlene.

“I like my art to tell a story. Sometimes the story is about good working dogs and how they manage the cattle, or a dusty cattle drive and sometimes it’s the tranquility of a windmill beside a dam or the majesty of a bottle tree on the hill. Sometimes it’s about our native flora or fauna. I appreciate all of these.”

Marlene was born in rural Victoria and now lives near Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia. Mostly self taught throughout childhood and adolescence; a rural high school education meant limited art class opportunities and Marlene was in fact the only Year 12 Art student at Derrinallum High School in 1979, so the theory was by correspondence.

As an adult relocating often for her husbands career and with three children, Marlene studied her Diploma in Complete Commercial Art & Graphic Design with Stotts Correspondence College. All the while being involved in local art groups and learning from various Art Workshops to expand her knowledge and skills.

But no amount of lessons or books can replace practice, practice and more practice. When often asked,  “How long did that take to paint” the answer is “A lifetime!… Of practice, experimentation, failures, learning from the failures, frustration, disappointment and sometimes great satisfaction.”

Marlene is also a true believer that an integral part of development for an artist, is to always be challenged so you can continue to improve your skills. Working in various media, Marlene loves the different challenges of Pastel, Graphite, Colour Pencil, Charcoal, Acrylic and Oil. Experience over many years has instilled the importance of always using Artist Quality products and Marlene’s work is framed to an archival standard by an internationally accredited picture framer.

Marlene has won various awards, written a demonstration article published in the Australian Artist Magazine and exhibited solely and with groups. Currently Marlene produces paintings for commissions and exhibitions; along with teaching drawing and pastels.
