Pamela Gough’s contemporary cityscapes are historical narratives featuring character houses and historical maps. Inspired by the stories behind the houses and the patterns in the landscape, Pam’s paintings scratch at the surface of life to reveal the spirit of a place, especially in her own backyard of Brisbane, Queensland.
Often embedded with the illustrative detail of antique maps and ancient symbols, her works make connections to the past and look for direction on the everyday map of life. From the whimsical houses dancing on ridges; the texture of corrugated roofs and palings to the triangles of red and white roofs and the ever present calming blue skies, her works celebrate life and spirit and invite the viewer to take a deeper look at what’s in their own backyard.
Born in Brisbane, Pam has a Diploma in Visual Arts and has studied a wide variety of art forms since the 80s. From iIluminated manuscripts and European traditional Art (storytelling and symbolism) to Associate Diploma in Creative Arts – taught by Australian Artist Bill Robinson. In the 1990s Pam built and ran her own decorative art business “Final Touch-decorative art” and painted “house portrait” commissions, and taught art.
She returned to study in 2006 and when researching and illustrating her project book “My Brisbane”, she discovered the joys of being “a tourist in her own town” and what little she knew about it. From that turning point, her art blossomed with the BCC community project and series “Mitchie Turns 150”, in 2007. That energy and creativity, combining history and landscape, expanded through to her “Qld 150” series in 2009 with “Impact on Moreton Bay” unveiling Pam’s work as a Tattersalls Landscape Art Prize Finalist.
Pam continued to explore more deeply the spirit of the places she visits. The “My Town” 2011 series in the aftermath of the Brisbane Floods celebrated community, and “Coast to Home” 2012 explored Queenslanders’ love affair with the beach. Being a tourist in her own country was inspiring and endlessly rewarding, and her 2013 solo exhibition “Take Me There” summarised that.
“In My Backyard”2014 was a closer look at Brisbane character housing and 2015 finds Pamela connecting closer with her celtic heritage in her far-reaching exhibition “The Way Back Home”, after her first trip to Europe & Ireland. She was forced to cancel her 2016 & 17 exhibitions due to a hand injury, and shoulder reconstruction surgery, but her love of maps, scouting around and the healing powers of nature saw Pam back on board for the 2018 exhibition of new and retrospective “historic” pieces to celebrate the places that have captured her heart and soul “Around the Place 2018”.
Pam continues to paint Commissions or House Protraits, capturing the story of a family, their home and their special place which provides an opportunity for her to travel other journeys and experience shared stories.
