Unconcerned with the literal depiction of things. I paint in layers. cover, filter, reveal details, tuck away distraction, and manifest a moment with colour, texture and shape, free from objective context. I paint form and visual imagery that invites enquiry and response. Each painting is a journey of layers that evolve. A series of creative moments.
My inspiration comes from the world around me.
A shadow falling in a certain way, or the structure of branches may catch my eye. I build compositions in my mind out of shapes made from shadow and light. If there is a realistic element within the work, then the story is built around that element.
My tools have changed over the years.
Brushes of every size and description have given way to spatulas, palette knives, some baking tools make applying paint the same as icing a cake.
I mix up my mediums. Acrylic paint for washes and faster painting.
Oil paint for paintings that grow slowly over time.
It’s a mood thing, which is developed through the marks I make on the canvas as part of my process.
I don’t engage with a painting the same way each time. Sometimes a painting calls for thin layers, sometimes a dry brush effect, or loads of paint and texture. No two paintings will ever be the same.
