This picture has been influenced by my experiences and the people I have met during my time in the Middle East, although it was partly inspired by a line from the song “Wish You Were Here” by Pink Floyd (that provides the title).
One of the themes here is the modern with the traditional, an observation which I have found intriguing among the people of the region. Underneath the girl’s Hijab reveals the contemporary fashion and accessories one would see in any young lady, while on her hands can be seen the henna designs often worn by woman across the Middle East and other parts of Southern Asia.
The depiction of wind is also symbolic. The girl is facing the wind signifying the elusive winds of change that that enable women the choice to achieve their potential as well as the headwinds of discrimination and abuse that obstruct them.
