Whilst the piazzas, palaces churches and other sights dominate Venice, the back canals offer the serenity of “la Serenissima” with quaint architecture, local tavernas and small squares with bars and shops for the locals, well sought out to experience real life in the town on water.
The backblocks are a maze to negotiate, and a detailed map is essential, particularly to locate the necessary bridges, these often being arranged in no particular order. Almost invariably the houses have small balconies for viewing, gossiping with the neighbours and possibly snooping also.
