An 11th Light Horse Regiment has been stationed in the desert south of Beersheba, known now as the Negev. They were sent to patrol this area in 1917 after the first battle for Gaza, and until the Turks were totally routed from the area some time after the fall of Beersheba. Their purpose was to discover and prevent any incursion by the enemy behind the front line between Gaza and Beersheba. This scout patrol has come across some suspicious fresh tracks – are they Turkish enemy scouts or wandering Bedouin?

Either way, they cannot be trusted, so they must discover their whereabouts quickly, for the day is almost gone. Tracking is the most dangerous of all scouting activities and usually done on foot – not this time. Time is of the essence, and this highly valued “black tracker” is capable of tracking quickly and accurately from the saddle while there is enough light.

The tracker, cannot hide under the scant cover available, so is exposed in the open and vulnerable to attack, also the patrol does not want to risk being led into a possible ambush; so out of the picture the scout leader spreads out his men, going ahead of and flanking their tracker, ensuring that no enemy can attack him while he is intent on following the trail. Covering him from behind and keeping a sharp lookout as well, are two of his companions in support.”
