Description
"Open Edition Reproduction
The Ca D’Oro/ “Golden House/Palazzo Santa Sofia) derives its name from original gilding of the facade.
Built by the prominent Contarini family in the early 15th century, the palace is widely admired as the best example of Venetian Gothic architecture, the facade displaying a fascinating combination of the designs and motifs of that style whilst achieving a harmonious outcome not rivalled by the sites that incorporate similar styling. The palazzo is a museum of artwork donated by baron Giorgio Franchetti, its last owner, who donated the site to the State."
