The back block canals of Venice are traversed via a web of footpaths and bridges that are difficult to navigate for the newcomer and require constant map references to avoid difficulties.
The bridges present countless variations of structure and adornment. The ironwork in particular displays considerable individuality of design and shape that challenge illustration.
The ubiquitous canals are often tiny, sometimes replaced with walkways and restaurants and shops, or just bare, without even tethering poles for the plethora of boats that infest these areas.
