The medieval citadel of Carcassonne In south-west France occupies a dominant position in a bend in the Aude river, overlooking its township from the heights once occupied by a Celtic oppidum before Roman times. Successive rulers have come and gone.
The Cathars were expelled by Simon de Montfort and the town was sacked by the Black Prince. The walls and fortifications are now a UNESCO site popular with tourists. The countryside is famous for Cahors wine.
