Carnevale (vale carne – farewell to meat) is one of the world’s foremost cultural events, held in Venice at the beginning of Lent, after which meat consumption's traditionally banned until Easter. A riotous celebration ensues, notably with masked and colourful attire,. Here, a masked beauty is in the lobby of the Danieli hotel, itself within the Palazzo Dandolo, home of the famous Doge who oversaw the sack of Constantinople by the forces of the fourth Crusade.
