The original old Water Tower on Garfield Drive, Paddington, Brisbane can be seen for miles around as it stands aloft, above the cottages. The cottages and newer additions below the Water Tower are an accurate depiction of 2024 Paddington. The scene transitions quickly at this time of day. It is the moment the Street lights flicker into life and welcoming lights spill from windows. I’m often walking around my local suburbs at this time, enjoying the smell of meals being prepared, the clink of cutlery, families in conversation and the murmur of TVs. Some of my family immigrated to Queensland when many of these cottages were being built in 1890. I like to imagine the lives lived within these cottages since that time and I’m thankful so many have survived.
