Another of my intuitive works, God’s Country has bits of the many ‘high country’ places I have been. The rocky ranges disappearing in the distance, the sheer cliff-faces that somehow support life: these places, to me, are truly are awe-inspiring.
We often hear of places described as ‘God’s Country’… Is it the rugged untouched beauty that reminds us that we are mere mortals on this ancient earth? Or is it that we are ‘close to God’ – physically or spiritually – in such places? Whilst it’s most unlikely to find a cross in such Australian landscapes, in God fearing countries, crosses are often strategically placed, as if to declare: “This is God’s Country”. For me, the cross in this work is a nod to the ‘heavenly’ beauty and isolation: where I can only understand this majesty through the belief that there is some supreme being…
