By 80 million years ago the floor of the South Atlantic had grown in area by “runny lava” being extruded up through the spreading centres, crystalising and pushing Africa and South America apart.  The ages of this crystalised “runny lava” are youngest near the spreading centre and oldest near the African and South American coasts.
