Ports of Call

Nature giving way at the river mouth

Description

Open Edition Reproduction

Ports are the entries of human enterprise, the gathering of commerce and mixing of cultures, the hub of global interaction, arriving and departing. A place where the river mouth opens into the ocean, the start of adventures and exploring. Ports open to the world or set boundaries to a country. This painting started as a tree at the mouth of a river and as I applied the layers and started scraping back, the harbour emerged. I saw cranes and barriers of trade which would leave no place for a tree to grow. Pillars of concrete would replace roots and the shadow of branches would be great metal ladders swinging across the water.
