The first pelican to land on the submerged branch is moving over for its mate. The winter sun hangs low over the river gums on the opposite bank of the Barcoo River at Isisford, and most of the river and river banks are in shadow, but at this spot the sun’s warmth and light falling on the submerged branch form an ideal pelican sunning perch. I particularly liked how the cool colors of the shaded river gum foliage in the reflections contrasted with the stark black and white of the pelicans feathers; and how the sunlight striking that favored spot glowed on the water and reflected up onto the bellies of the pelicans. We spent a great deal of relaxing time watching the antics of pelicans while camped on the banks of the Barcoo!
