Open Edition Reproduction

The great basilica, named after the Sacred Heart of Jesus, is built high on the butte of Montmartre, in northern Paris, facing south with views over much of the city. The site is that of the beheading of St Denis, the patron saint of Paris. Nearby, the founding of the Jesuit Society of Jesus by Ignatius Loyola began in 1534.

Built over 40 years from 1875, its construction served to partially extirpate the sorrows of the 1870 Franco-Prussian war disaster. The basilica is eclipsed only by the Eiffel Tower as the most popular tourist destination in Paris.
