Sam, I am… utterly pawsome.
Sam spends his twilight years reclining on a chaise lounge overlooking the sea. No longer able to navigate stairs, he has convinced his family to move downstairs to sleep with him. He has an accomplice "Bluey" the cat who keeps a watchful eye on things while pretending to sleep. Sam is a bit of a nail biter, loving to keep those long claws in tip top shape.
Sam still loves his beach walks – in his mind he is still a puppy (of enormous proportions being a Ridgeback). He is a gentle giant, docile, a little dopey, but always waiting at the top of the stairs with a wag of that skinny little tail for mum to come home. The perspective in this drawing perfectly accentuates the size of his already enormous paws.
This is a fine art reproduction of a 70x50cm Caren D'Ache coloured pencil drawing on Pastelmat board. I began drawing dogs in graphite then progressed to coloured pencils before taking up oil painting. I had so much fun working with pencils again as they allow for the fine detail required to capture fur and whiskers. His fur is a multitude of colours, purples, browns and oranges underneath, with cream and gold highlights. There are glimpses of blue light reflecting off his nose and those wistful eyes will draw you in.
The perfect pigeon pair for "Sam" is "Bluey".
