The Place is perhaps the top spot in town for elegance, in the 1st arrondissement. Established by Louis 16th to rival his predecessor’s Place des Vosges and completed in 1720, the Place is named after Cesar de Bourbon, Duke of Vendome and illegitimate son of Henri IV. Prominent in the Place is the Austerlitz column, modelled on Trajan’s column and which celebrates Napoleon’s victory. A statue of Louis and the Column were badly damaged during the 1870 Commune troubles, but Napoleon’s memorial was extensively restored.
The buildings have uniform pedimented screens and include the premises of many of the leading fashion establishments including Cartier, Rolex, Chanel, Boucheron, and miscellaneous jewellery, perfumery and gift salons.
The Ritz Hotel is at No. 15.
The Blue Door is the entrance to 1 Place Vendome, located in the southwest corner of the Place, adjacent to the entry of the Rue de Castiglione into the Place. The hotel is a flagship of the Chopard horological house, opened in 2023 as an ultimate-luxury experience, but with a very understated approach, avoiding the razzamatazz of What’s behind the blue door?
