Mustering up the cattle in outback Australia. This artwork was inspired by a photograph of my niece when she worked at the Moolooloo Station in SA. She was a jillaroo and would muster up the cattle on horseback.
I chose to use charcoal with this piece as it suited the nature of the outback landscape. I wanted to show the dust from the dry roads as it builds behind the cattle when they gather in a herd. They walk harmoniously together but there is always one going astray. The horse and rider look relaxed as they lead the way.
This image shows the vast dryness of the SA landscape. Our Australian outback is very beautiful but she can also be very harsh. These cattle stations are a way of life that most people only hear about, but it is a lifestyle and a career for the jackaroo and jillaroo who work these outback stations.
