This cooking school was affiliated with a shop that sold kitchen equipment and situated in New York not far from Times Square. You could view the session from the street which delighted some of the students who were only too pleased to have someone take an interest what they were doing. The man in this scene was so pleased, he gave me a wave! This had to be included in the composition and inspired the title to the work. The pleasure in painting it was increased with the prospect of painting the utensils made of different materials.
