The original artwork was an oil on canvas and now reproductions are available. All the herbs were picked from my garden. As a former restauranteur, I use herbs in my cooking nearly every day. The three dimensional effect is attained by tonal depth and 10,000 purple toned shadows and subtle yellow light refracting around the edges.
The herbs used in Asian cooking are on the top right – Vietnamese Mint, chilli, curry leaves, lemon grass, coriander and ridiculously hot bird's eye chillies.
The herbs used in French cooking are on the bottom right – Lemon verbena, sweet basil, mint, continental parsley, curly parsley, sage, oregano and a prostrate rosemary that borders my garden path and exudes an intoxicating smell when you brush past it. Sadly I didn't have any thyme growing in the garden.
The star of the painting is the fennel on the left, which may be used in making the liquor absinthe, or maybe there is a cheeky hidden meaning in the title…?
This work was voted People's Choice Award #1 at the HDGA 2022 Exhibition.
