The twisting neck and amazing eye of this beautiful darter inspired this painting. I was watching this male Australasian darter on a peaceful and tranquil day with cool blue waters of the swan river behind. What really captured me was the sinuous twists in the neck mirroring that of the river behind, the amazing colour and patterns in the eye and that drop of water on the beak. The yellow beak and eye provide a wonderful contrast against the dark blue water of the river.
