Limited Edition Reproduction of 100 Only
This is the second painting in a series of three all of which sprang into life and onto the canvas around a central theme of ancient ruins.
I’m drawn to the weather-beaten, old-world look and charm of man-made stone relics and ruins. They remain an intriguing snapshot of their former glory.
I research and assemble all the visual elements and in this way build the narratives and storylines into my paintings.
In this particular artwork the sky is a vital element. As too is the physical location and the sense of place and time it imparts.
The hyenas? They seem the embodiment of evil and convey a sense of foreboding by just being hyenas. They became part of the narrative before the female and child. Although I had to cunningly, place each individual animal in the group.
The small child and female, presumably mother and child, came about by pure happenstance. As did the old pick-up truck.
As a child, probably aged about eight, I’d lie on the on the floor and with pencil in hand I’d draw cars, lorries, trucks – imaginary vehicles in imaginary locations.
So the old truck is a reminder, a personal memory and something of a curved ball.
In fact this whole work is something of a curved ball. I don’t have any plan or preconception when I’m creating the visual elements and in all honesty have no idea where the ideas come from.
I do realise the viewer may find this work a little disquieting. There’s a challenging, sense of unease about it. Although I think the title (borrowed from Mr. McCartney) is fitting.
